Ghana has been requested to participate in the implementation of the Ukrainian Peace Formula, a ten-point strategy aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President, remarked during a discussion with his Ghanaian counterpart, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on the sidelines of the 2024 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, that Ghana’s participation in peace negotiations was critical.

The Ukrainian authorities have been attempting to persuade the international community to support the implementation of the peace plan to halt hostilities.

The important elements are food and energy security, territorial integrity, environmental safety, prisoner release and departure of Russian soldiers from Ukraine, and the avoidance of future aggression.

Ghana, a symbol of peace and political stability in the sub-region, has strengthened its collaboration and bilateral connections with the fighting countries, particularly in education, research, and technology.

During the discussion, the two presidents talked about methods to strengthen connections between Ukraine and Ghana, as well as with other African nations.

They also discussed the education of Ghanaian students at Ukrainian higher education institutions, as well as the possibility of establishing logistical hubs for the transshipment of Ukrainian agricultural goods to African countries.

President Zelenskyy praised Ghana for supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, notably via international organisational choices.

Russia and Ukraine are important commodity producers.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the conflict has led world prices to skyrocket, particularly for oil and natural gas, and food costs to skyrocket, with wheat, which Ukraine and Russia sell 30 percent of, setting a new high.

Economies relying on oil imports would face larger fiscal and trade deficits, as well as increased inflation pressure, however some exporters, particularly those in the Middle East and Africa, may gain from higher prices, according to the Fund’s current forecast.

In his presentation to this year’s WEF, President Zelenskyy urged the global community to stay unified in its support for Ukraine in the face of what he described as ongoing Russian aggression.

He announced preparations for a worldwide meeting to promote peace, which he hopes to hold in Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s team to the Forum, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, has held a series of talks with key stakeholders and world leaders.

The talks focused on four important themes: establishing security and collaboration in a divided world, producing growth and jobs for a new era, using artificial intelligence to drive the economy and society, and developing a long-term plan for climate, nature, and energy.
